The castle of Mylopotamos is already attested from the beginning of the 13th century but it is not clear in which era it dates. Some Venetian chronicles place the construction of the castle in the years of Genoese rule (1206-1211). The fortress was from early on the seat of a military commander (castellan) and a strong guard. In 1647 it was occupied by the Turks. The Venetians with the general Gildasi tried in vain to recapture it. In 1583 it was destroyed by Barbarossa. Today only traces of this powerful fortification remain. It was built on the coast, in the middle of the current settlement of Panormos. It was a typical medieval fortress with rectangular towers and straight post-tower sections, with a small number of buildings/houses inside. It is preserved in a dilapidated state.
