The settlement of Dafnedes is located at an altitude of 160m and is 32 km. from Rethymnon. It is a village rich in history and tradition.

The earliest reference to Daphnedes in Venetian documents is made in 1577. The passage of the Venetians and the Turks is evident in the architecture of the settlement. Many of its buildings retain elements of these two conquerors, which give a special color to the settlement. The settlement’s churches are important religious and historical monuments. Inside the settlement and around it there are the churches of Agios Savvas, Agios Georgios, Panagia and Agioi Saranda. The church of Saint Saranda belongs to the architectural type of the free cross with a dome, which dates back to the 11th century. The old mansions, the traditional fountains and the Byzantine churches that have survived to this day bear witness to the rich cultural past of the village.

The settlement of Dafnedos is one of the traditional settlements of Greece.
