The holy Church of Panagia Apanokastriani is located just above the village of Kastri on Apano Kastri hill. The temple is built in the two-aisled asymmetrical type on the foundations of an older one. The surviving building has undergone interventions mainly in the appearance and reinforcement of the northern wall. Both entrances have undergone interventions, but retain the pointed relief arches. The building consists of a main and a secondary aisle. The main aisle is covered with a pointed arch, while the secondary aisle is covered with a half arch. The arch of the sanctuary is decorated with toxilia (small arches placed in a continuous formation, under a horizontal cornice) and three coats of arms of the Kallergi family. Remains of its frescoes date back to the first half of the 14th century.
The temple is one of the two-aisled, asymmetric domed temples that appeared for the first time in Crete during the 14th century. The type of double-aisled temple is found mainly in the area of mountainous Mylopotamos, the area of activity of the Kallergi family
